How to Take Wegovy Oral Tablets

The correct way to take Wegovy oral tablets — fasting window, water rules, what happens if you skip the window, and common mistakes that reduce how much medication your body absorbs.

Wegovy oral tablets have strict administration requirements. Unlike injectables, the amount of medication your body actually absorbs depends heavily on how you take them. Following these instructions exactly is the most important thing you can do to make sure the medication works.

How to take Wegovy tablets

  • Take one tablet by mouth once daily, in the morning

  • Take it on an empty stomach

  • Swallow whole with up to 4 ounces (half a cup) of plain water only

  • Do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet

  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medications

Why the fasting window matters so much

Wegovy tablets use an absorption-enhancing technology (called SNAC) that needs to interact with your stomach lining while it's empty. If you eat, drink anything other than water, or take other medications before the 30-minute window is up, your stomach's absorption of the medication drops by an estimated 60 to 80 percent — effectively losing most of that day's dose.

This is the most common reason patients feel like oral Wegovy isn't working. The dose on the label is what you get when you follow the instructions. Break the window and you may be getting a fraction of it.

The water rule

Plain water only — up to 4 ounces (about half a standard water glass). No coffee, tea, juice, sparkling water, or anything else. Even small amounts of other beverages reduce absorption. The 4-ounce cap also matters — more water dilutes the SNAC mechanism.

Can I take it at a different time of day?

The label specifies morning dosing on an empty stomach. Most people find it easiest to take it immediately upon waking, before anything else. If morning doesn't work for your routine, talk to your clinician — but the empty stomach and 30-minute wait requirements don't change regardless of timing.

What if I forget to wait 30 minutes?

If you ate, drank something other than water, or took another medication before the 30-minute window was up, that day's dose is largely lost. Do not take an extra tablet to compensate. Continue your normal schedule the next morning and stick to the fasting window.

What if I miss a dose entirely?

Skip the missed dose. Do not double up the next day. Resume your normal morning schedule.

Can I cut the tablet in half to save money?

No. The SNAC absorption enhancer is coformulated throughout the tablet and needs to interact with your stomach lining intact. Splitting destroys this mechanism and means the medication won't be absorbed properly. Always take the full tablet whole.

Is Wegovy oral the same as Rybelsus?

No. Both contain semaglutide but they are different products with different doses and different FDA-approved indications. Wegovy oral is approved for weight management. Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes. Maximus carries Wegovy oral and does not carry Rybelsus.

How does oral Wegovy compare to the injectable?

From published trials, the 25 mg/day oral tablet and the 2.4 mg/week injectable deliver similar weight-loss outcomes at their respective maintenance doses. The oral form has a slightly higher rate of nausea, particularly during titration. Individual response varies — your clinician can help you understand what to expect for your specific situation.

If you're switching from the Wegovy injectable to the oral tablet, your provider will direct the dose mapping. Per the label, the 2.4 mg/week injection and the 25 mg/day tablet are considered equivalent maintenance doses.

Storage
