This article covers the operational steps for completing your at-home testosterone test — when to collect, how to ship, and what to do if something goes wrong. For what the kit measures and what to expect overall, see At-Home Testosterone Kit: Patient Guide.
Before you collect
Collect in the morning, immediately after waking and before eating or drinking. Hormone levels — especially testosterone — are naturally highest at this time.
Stay hydrated the day before to improve blood flow and make collection easier.
Use the heat pack included in your kit as directed to enhance circulation.
When to collect (baseline vs. follow-up)
Baseline testing (before starting a Maximus protocol):
Complete the test early in the morning, fasted
One vial is used for the Complete Blood Count (CBC), which your doctor reviews before approving treatment
Follow-up testing (already on a Maximus medication):
Wait 3–4 weeks after starting your medication before collecting
Collect your sample 1–4 hours after taking your medication to accurately reflect current levels
Same morning collection rule applies
Advanced Test Kit:
Use both vials provided
Fill each vial between the two indicated lines per the included instructions
What's in your kit
Your package generally includes a collection device, step-by-step instructions, a heat pack, a prepaid return mailer, and packaging materials required for safe return. If any component is missing or damaged when your kit arrives, contact support before starting.
Collection steps
Read the instructions before starting
Collect your sample in a comfortable, well-lit space
Follow the included steps closely — warm your hands first, take your time
Package the sample securely before returning
If you have difficulty collecting a sample, see "If you can't collect enough blood" below.
Shipping rules
Rule | Detail |
Ship same day | Mail your sample immediately after collection |
Accepted ship days | Monday–Thursday only |
Never ship Friday | Weekend transit can compromise sample quality |
Drop the sealed mailer with the designated carrier. Shipping outside the U.S. is not supported — international returns cannot be processed.
Lab processing and results
After the lab receives your sample, testing begins once it passes quality checks. Results are posted in your portal within a standard processing window. Timing varies based on shipping time, lab volume, and sample quality.
If your sample is marked insufficient, clotted, contaminated, incomplete, or unable to meet testing requirements, you'll be contacted with next steps. This may include a replacement kit or an alternative lab option.
If you can't collect enough blood
You have two options:
Option 1 — Quest Diagnostics lab visit. Request a lab requisition and have your blood drawn in person by a trained phlebotomist. This reduces collection errors. Cost is $115 for the requisition; lab fees may be billed separately by Quest.
Option 2 — Order a replacement kit. You can order another Maximus at-home test kit. Replacement kits typically arrive within 3–7 business days. If the replacement is due to a kit defect or processing error, there's no charge. If due to a collection issue or running out of time, additional charges may apply. Contact support for specifics on your situation.
For full pricing and replacement policy details, see Lab Kit Policies and Charges.
Storage and handling
Follow the instructions included with the kit. In general:
Keep the kit at room temperature
Do not use a kit that appears damaged or contaminated
Make sure all components are sealed until use
Do not substitute materials not included in the kit
If the kit arrives damaged, expired, or compromised, take photographs and contact support for a replacement.
FAQ
Why is morning testing recommended? Testosterone levels peak early in the day, providing the most consistent and accurate baseline.
Why ship the same day? Delays in transit can degrade sample quality. Same-day shipping ensures the lab receives your sample in optimal condition.
What happens if I mail my sample on a Friday? Labs typically don't process samples over the weekend, which can compromise results. Always ship Monday–Thursday.
My kit hasn't arrived — what do I do? Contact support. The team can confirm shipment status and arrange a replacement if needed.
My sample was rejected — am I charged for a replacement? If the rejection was due to a kit defect or processing error, no charge. If due to a collection issue (clotting, insufficient volume), additional charges may apply. Contact support for specifics. See Lab Kit Policies and Charges for full pricing details.
